No More Scary Storage: Organizing Halloween & Fall Decorations

Decorating for Fall is fun, but let’s be honest, pulling out broken pumpkins, tangled garland and lights, and mystery décor that hasn’t been used in ages isn’t. Just a small amount of organization can make decorating and packing away that much easier.

  1. Take Inventory of What You Have Now

Take everything out and make a running list of what you already have. This step only takes several minutes and it’s the perfect opportunity to let go of any broken, outdated, and unused décor.

This will not only create more storage space but also prevent you from purchasing any duplicate or unnecessary items.

2. Sort By Holiday or Season

Instead of having one large “fall” category, categorize décor into groups by:

  • Fall

  • Halloween

  • Thanksgiving

Doing this will ease the transition of each season without having to dig through an excess of storage bins.

3. Protect The Pieces You Love

Not everything has to be tossed into a plastic storage bin. Those beautiful wreaths, fragile pumpkins, and sentimental decorations deserve a place for safe-storage keeping, too.

Pro Tip: Always purchase more storage bins than you think you need to avoid cramming and overpacking.

Pro Tip: Wrap delicate items utilizing decorative towels that you’re already packing awayThe last thing you want and need are to pull out crushed or damaged items come next autumn.

4. Label, Label, Label

Instead of “Fall”, try subgrouping into more detailed categories such as:

  • Fall - Front Porch

  • Halloween - Indoor Décor

  • Thanksgiving - Table Décor

This method makes most use of the label, as well as helps you better identify what it is that’s inside.

5. Don’t Forget the Empty Space

The hard part is out of the way and all of a sudden you’re left with empty storage bins and shelves. Instead of tossing them in the attic or basement, keep the containers together rather than letting them migrate around the house.

Once it’s time to put everything away, you’ll know exactly where everything belongs.

6. Pack Smarter, Not Harder

There’s no better time to improve your holiday storage system than when putting away decorations.

If something was frustrating this year, fix the system before you store it away again.

Fall decorations may only come out for a few weeks each year, but a little organization can make a big difference in how much you enjoy them. When everything has a designated place, decorating becomes less about digging through boxes and more about enjoying the season. With Christmas right around the corner, now is the perfect time to get your holiday storage under control.
